New install on macOS Sonoma, request new password but won't accept it

When the company deploys a password policy and requires to reset passwords at the next login, for MacOS 14.0 users, Apple has a potential bug that has been resolved in MacOS 14.1. Here is what happened.

  1. The company set up a password policy on Swif and requires a reset password at the next login.

  2. Password policy deploys to a list of devices

  3. When the screen saver lock kicks in, try to log back into the device.

  4. A new password is requested.

    1. Password is rejected because "Your password does not meet the requirements of the server."

    2. The built-in macOS password check shows all rules in green.

    3. You tried every password config that would make sense, with no luck.

Fortunately, there are 5 separate solutions to this issue.

  1. Set to false for "Reset passcode at next login" at the password policy to prevent this from happening.

  2. When the device has already awaited a new password at the next login, and the Reset Password shows up, you can reset your password using an Apple ID from another device.

  3. For devices that have upgraded to MacOS 14.1, this problem won't occur. Apple has fixed it.

  4. If you have received the password reset request when you are logged in, you can reset the password at the settings directly.

  5. The last solution is more complex but very doable. When Reset Password comes up you can not reset to the new password even if you use a new password you have never used before. You can try this order and the password reset will work.

    1. Click Cancel from the current reset

    2. Restart computer

    3. Enter your old password to log in. Now the reset password would show up again.

    4. Click Cancel again

    5. Enter your old password to log in. Now the reset password would show up again.

    6. Now you can try to enter a new password you never used before. It would let you reset the password.
