Understanding a device's Installation Type

Overview

Installation Type shows how a device was enrolled in Swif. It tells admins which enrollment method was used, which affects what Swif can manage on the device.

Where to find it

  1. In the Swif web app, go to Devices.

  2. Select a device to open its details page.

  3. On the Overview tab, find the Device Info card.

  4. Look at the Installation Type row (below Condition).

Installation Type vs. Ownership Type

Installation Type shows how a device enrolled. Ownership Type, in the header of the device details page, shows who owns it:

  • Organization owned: a company device

  • User owned (BYOD): a personal device enrolled under Bring Your Own Device

The two fields work together. For example, an SSO device can be either company-owned or a personal device:

Why it matters

  • Available features depend on how the device enrolled. ADE (DEP) devices are fully managed by your organization. Devices enrolled with the Swif Installer run the Swif agent, which supports agent-based features.

  • Personal devices enrolled with SSO have limits. The Swif agent can't be installed on a personal device enrolled through Enrollment SSO, so many management features won't work on it. For personal devices, we recommend the Swif Installer.

  • Enrollment SSO needs setup first. Your organization must set up and verify its Apple enrollment domain in Swif before devices can enroll through SSO.

FAQ

Can I change a device's Installation Type?

No. It reflects how the device enrolled. To change it, unenroll the device and enroll it again with a different method.

A device shows the wrong Installation Type. What should I do?

Check which method was actually used to enroll it. If the value still looks wrong, contact Swif Support and include the device's serial number.
