Android Display Settings Policy

Updated yesterday

Introduction

The Android Display Settings Policy allows IT administrators to manage and enforce display-related settings on managed Android devices. This policy is essential for organizations that want to ensure a consistent user experience, optimize device battery life, and prevent users from changing critical display configurations.

This article explains the purpose of the Android Display Settings Policy, typical use cases, and general steps for applying the policy using Swif’s MDM platform.

What is the Android Display Settings Policy?

The Android Display Settings Policy is a device management control that enables administrators to:

  • Set and lock screen brightness levels.

  • Configure screen timeout durations (how long before the display turns off when idle).

  • Enforce automatic brightness or adaptive brightness settings.

  • Prevent users from changing display settings that could impact usability or security.

  • Standardize display configurations across all managed devices.

Why Use a Display Settings Policy?

  • Consistency: Ensure all devices have the same display settings for branding, usability, or compliance.

  • Battery Optimization: Prevent users from setting excessively high brightness or long screen timeouts that drain battery.

  • Security: Reduce the risk of unauthorized access by enforcing short screen timeouts and automatic locking.

  • User Experience: Provide a predictable and professional device experience for employees or customers.

Typical Configuration Options

While the exact options may vary by MDM provider, a standard Android Display Settings Policy may include:

  • Screen Brightness: Set a fixed brightness level or allow adaptive brightness.

  • Screen Timeout: Define how long the device waits before turning off the display when idle.

  • Auto-Lock: Set the duration before the device automatically locks after the screen turns off.

  • Night Mode/Dark Theme: Enforce or allow the use of night mode or dark theme.

  • Prevent User Changes: Lock display settings to prevent user modification.

How to Apply the Android Display Settings Policy in Swif

  1. Navigate to Device Policies:
In the Swif admin console, go to the device policy management section.

  2. Select or Create Policy:
Choose an existing policy or create a new one for Android devices.

  3. Enable Android Display Settings Policy:
Locate the ANDROID_DISPLAY_SETTINGS_POLICY setting. Configure the desired display options (brightness, timeout, lock, etc.).

  4. Assign Policy to Devices:
Apply the policy to the desired device groups or individual devices.

  5. Save and Deploy:
Save your changes and ensure the policy is deployed to the targeted devices.

Important Notes

  • Devices must be enrolled in Android Enterprise/Work Profile mode for full policy enforcement.

  • Some display settings may depend on device manufacturer and Android OS version.

  • Users may not be able to override display settings when the policy is enforced.
