Understanding Android Device Management Modes: Full Managed, Work Profile, and BYOD

Updated this week

When managing mobile devices in an organization, it’s important to understand the different management modes available. Here’s a clear explanation of three common approaches: Full Managed, Work Profile, and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).

1. Full Managed

Full Managed (sometimes called "Fully Managed Device" or "Corporate-Owned, Managed Device") refers to a device that is owned by the organization and fully controlled by IT administrators. This mode is typically used for company-issued devices.

Key Features:

  • The organization has complete control over the device.

  • IT can enforce security policies, install or remove apps, and restrict device features.

  • Personal use is usually limited or not allowed.

  • Ideal for devices used exclusively for work.

Use Case:
Best for employees who are issued a company phone or tablet that is only used for business purposes.

2. Work Profile

A Work Profile is a management mode that separates work data and apps from personal data on the same device. This is commonly used on employee-owned devices (BYOD) or company-owned devices that allow personal use.

Key Features:

  • Creates a separate, secure "work" space on the device.

  • Work apps and data are managed by IT, while personal apps and data remain private.

  • IT cannot access personal data or apps.

  • Users can switch between work and personal profiles easily.

Use Case:
Ideal for employees who use their personal device for both work and personal activities, or for company-owned devices that allow personal use.

3. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

BYOD stands for "Bring Your Own Device." In this model, employees use their personal devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for work purposes.

Key Features:

  • Employees retain ownership and primary control of the device.

  • The organization may require installation of a management app or work profile to secure corporate data.

  • IT can manage only the work-related portion of the device (if using a work profile).

  • Balances employee privacy with corporate security.

Use Case:
Best for organizations that want to allow employees to use their own devices for work, reducing hardware costs and increasing flexibility.
